Exit Peer Specialist Mubin Shaikh Featured in CNN Article: "‘A national warning.’ How an American teen went from ISIS sympathizer to a convict in recovery"
A new CNN article takes a close look at a radicalized teen and the work of our Exit Peer Specialist, Mubin Shaikh, who worked closely with him and his family for more than a year.
Mubin’s work reflects an important principle at the heart of Parents for Peace: disengagement from extremism is not simply about telling someone what not to believe. It is about building trust, addressing the personal needs and vulnerabilities that can make extremist narratives appealing, challenging harmful ideas, and creating a path away from hate.
As this article states, young people are becoming immersed in extremist online communities with alarming speed. It demonstrates why prevention and intervention requires people like Mubin, who can engage with radicalized individuals and show them the possibilities of hope and healing.
We’re proud of Mubin and the work he continues to do with families and individuals affected by extremism.
