The mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minnesota has left two children dead, dozens wounded, and a community shattered. It is yet another reminder that violence does not occur in a vacuum. These tragedies are almost always preceded by warning signs; behaviors, words, and symbols that, if recognized and acted upon, can save lives.
At Parents for Peace (P4P), we believe that early intervention is key. The Annunciation attack tragically illustrates why we must all pay closer attention to the markers of radicalization and violent intent.
Warning Signs
While every case is unique, there are common threads that connect mass shooters.
Gathering weapons or stockpiling ammunition
Explicit calls to violence and use of hate speech
Manifestos or online glorification of violence
Verbal admiration for mass killers or past attacks
Leakage of intent — sharing plans, threats, or hints about committing violence
Noticeable behavioral changes such as withdrawal, anger, or decline in functioning
Obsession with past shootings or idolization of attackers
History of domestic violence or aggression toward family members
Social isolation or feelings of alienation from peers and community
These warning signs are not abstract. They are real-world markers that families, friends, educators, and community leaders can and must be aware of. Just as we learn to identify the early symptoms of illness, we must educate ourselves to identify the early symptoms of violent radicalization.
What We Can Do
Listen and watch closely: Pay attention when someone verbalizes admiration for mass killings, adopts extremist symbols, or fixates on past attackers.
Take hateful writing seriously: Graffiti on weapons, journals, or online spaces that glorify violence should never be dismissed as “just words.”
Act early: Intervene before words turn into action. At P4P, we provide confidential, compassionate guidance for families who are worried about loved ones showing signs of radicalization or violent ideation.
